Endicott Council 1839 was named in honor of Msgr. Leonard Fries. Msgr. Fries served as a chaplain in World War II with the 4th Infantry Division. He went into France on D-Day, 1944, with the 12th Infantry Regiment of the 4th Division. He survived the D-Day landing, the hedgerow battles, the Battle of the Bulge and many more. He said the first Mass for the troupes in the famous Notre Dame Cathedral after the liberation of Paris. This latter fact was also noted in the book "Is Paris Burning?". Msgr. Fries was a native of Endicott and served as Chaplain for the Knights while pastor of Christ the King Church in Endwell. He was the most humble and gentle of men. He loved the children at his school and simply was a great man.
