Halsey Shay dies after Long Illness

A Prominent Elk Lake Farmer for many years, sustained Paralytic stroke nearly four years ago.
William Halsey Shay, a lifelong resident of Susquehanna county, died on Friday afternoon,
Feb. 10, 1933,after a period of failing health covering nearly four years. He was stricken
four years ago this coming April, with paralysis, and although suffering no apparent pain
during this long period, he was unable to walk and had been an invalid. A brief time before
his death he was again stricken and lapsed into unconsciousness, passing peacefully away.
The deceased followed farming at Elk Lake, his birthplace, for many years. He was a son of
James and Arminda (McKeeby) Shay, and was born Sept. 9, 1851 He was in his 82nd year.
Until he was fifty-five years of age he continued to engage in farming, but at that time, owing
to his suffering from rheumatism in a severe form, he retired,.
Possessed of good business judgment, he followed various lines of employment which resulted
profitably and he thus acquired a competence.
He was married on Dec. 21, 1876, to Miss Alice A. James, who dies Sept. 22, 1928. Four children
were born to them, two daughters dying at an early age, while two sons survive, Homer B. Shay of
Montrose, and Arthur Shay, of South Montrose. Also a sister, Mrs. Lizzie Cronk, of Montrose.
The sons and their wives tenderly cared for him during his long period of ill health.
The funeral was held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the home of his son, Homer on South
Cherry Street. The Rev. W. C Dodge, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church, officiated.
Interment was in the family plot in rush Center cemetery. The casket bearers were Allen Very,
Kenneth Norris, Mark lake, Searle Lake, Glen Roberts and Ira Ainey.
