August 6,7,8  Summer 2004!

The "Chautauqua Spears" Atlatl Club has formally been in existence since 2002. We hold weekly league throws during the summer weather permitting. We also host Atlatl and Primitive Arts related events.

Our weekly throws are usually held Thursday evening in Stockton, NY. Give us a call if your interested in joining our group or would like more information

Pictured below is from our Summer 2003 event at the Great Blue Heron Site in Sherman, NY.

Friday Night is our Infamous Torch Lit Throw, we use homemade torches to light the path to the target.

atlatl  ät-lät 'l or ätl-ätl noun 1871, a device for throwing a spear or dart that consists of a rod or board with a projection (as a hook or thong) at the rear end to hold the weapon in place until released. Nahuatl, from atla, to throw

Most throwers take a step forward as they throw and end with the atlatl pointing at the target. There are no standards for a local contests and any target and distances can be used.

In an ISAC (International Standard Accuracy Contest) targets must be of a size and dimension as laid out in the

The score on the target are 6,7,8,9,10 and X the X is a 10 and only used as a tie breaker. Three to five contestants take turns throwing 1 dart per round for 10 rounds, 5 each from 15 meters and 20 meters.

The basic idea behind using an atlatl (spear thrower) is to push a dart (spear) at the target. The dart has an indentation in the end that the atlatl spur fits into and with a little back pressure holds the dart in place.

We think Flint Knappers are great!
