Information Literacy
What is
information literacy? According to the BigSix™
Skills Approach, information literacy is defined as such:
"With the explosion of
information now available on the Internet, students must become
information literate. Information literacy is defined as an
individual's ability to:
- recognize a need for
information;
- identify and locate
appropriate information sources;
- know how to gain access to
the information contained in those sources;
- evaluate the quality of
information obtained;
- organize the information;
- use the information
effectively.
In an information literate
environment, students engage in active, self-directed learning
activities, and teachers facilitate students' learning by looking
beyond their classrooms for resources that will enrich the learning
environment."
