Nupix's Technology

 

  Nupix has invented a fiber-based technology that will revolutionize the display industry.  This new technology uses sheets of fiber to build the structure in a display.  Nupix's invention replaces the structure in a display panel with two sheets of fibers sandwiched between two plates.  The fibers that form the structure in the display have complex shapes containing wire electrodes and are formed using a draw process similar to that used in the optical fiber industry.  The entire functionality of the display is contained within each individual fiber.  Nupix has patented a manufacturing process that is as innovative as the technology itself.  The process uses one half the steps of the standard technology, none of which are alignment steps.  In addition, the process steps are simpler extrusion, fiber draw and spraying or doctor-blading compared to multi-level photolithography, vacuum deposition, and precision silk screening.  The fiber-based display technology has many benefits when compared to standard display technologies:

  • Very low start-up capital cost relative to existing flat panel technologies (factor of 10)
  • 50% lower manufacturing cost than standard processes
  • Fewer process steps – 1/2 compared to standard technologies
  • Expected higher yields – because of fewer and simpler process steps
  • All functions are included in the fiber which means:
    • No display size limit – possibly over 50 feet diagonal
    • No pixel size limit – 100 mm to 1 cm
    • No shape limit – curved displays are possible (fibers can be bent)
    • No multi-level alignment steps – simpler process
    • No large area process equipment or vacuum equipment
  • Shape and size flexibility off same manufacturing line – target many different markets
