Whittemore Hill History
I recently talked with Reverend Norman Whittemore. He said that his Great Great Grandfather, Isaac Whittemore, settled in the area in 1820. As the population of the area grew the people realized they needed a church, schoolhouse, and cemetery. About 1850 Isaac donated the land and in 1852 the United Methodist Church was built at the corner of Wesley & Whittemore Hill and the schoolhouse was erected at the Whittemore Hill & Walker Road intersection.
Although not sure where it is now, Reverend Whittemore says at least a partial list of the people buried in the cemetery did exist at one time. It is his understanding that soon after World War I several people died in a short period of time and the cemetery was filled. This was probably during the 1918 flu epidemic.
