Magic. The main cause of the state of Athas. Wielded by the Sorcerer-Kings, feared by the populace, used in a desparate attempt for life. On an unforgiving world the one hope may also be destruction. Survival entails useing magic when needed, but to be safe from frightened mobs and jealous Sorcerer-Kings, magic must be practiced in secret.
