Psionic Combat:

Use the MTHAC0 and MAC for psionic combat, and activation of psionic powers as described in both Skills and Powers and The Way of the Psionicist

When attacking a non-psionic mind (one without a PSP pool), one successful attack opens the targets mind.
When attacking a psionic mind, that mind remains closed until its is reduced to 0 PSPs, the attacker achieves a critical mental hit (see "critical mental hit" below), or the attacker achieves 5 "tangents" (see "tangents" below).

Critical Mental Hit:

If the character is a psionicist, when attacking, must roll a natural 18, 19, or 20 when making his MTHAC0 roll, and must beat the his opponents MAC by 5 or better.
If the character is a wild talent, then only a natural 20 will achieve a critical mental hit.
A natural 20 is always a critical mental hit.

If a critical mental hit is achieved, the target must fail a saving throw vs. paralyzation, or the attacker must infict mental damage to reduce the target's PSPs by 25% of his maximum pool, not the current amount of PSPs.
If the damage is 25% or more of the PSP maximum, there is no saving throw.

Tangents:

When an attack mode overcomes a defense mode, then the attacker has gained a partial contact to his oppenents mind. To achieve full contact with the mind, the attacker must make 5 successfull attacks to open the mind. Each successfull attack is a tangent.

When full contact is established, the attacker may use any telepathic power (as long as he is in range) or the psionic attacks, which would work on an open mind.

To maintain tangents, the attacker must pay 1 PSP per tangent each round. The attacker can maintain tangents with only one target at a time, though he is able to have full contact with any number of minds.

A tangent is broken when:
1) The attacker voluntarily breaks it by announcing he is going to do so.
2) The attacker fails to pay the maintainance cost of each of the tangents.
3) The attacker uses a psionic power against another foe.
4) The attacker is incapcitated.


With these modifications to Skills and Powers, The Way of the Psionicist and Psionic Abilities and Powers Update psionic combat is generally smooth. I hope these rules help you in your psionic combat!
