Gastronomical Unit
BAND BIO & INFO

Gastronomical Unit
CDs
GASTRONOMICAL UNIT's music is...
all original "thinking man's rock" - well-crafted meaningful thoughts and images,  with a modern rock feel, with techno, jazz, and theatre influences.
        . (Huh?)
   Let's see,  How about "Smart-pop?"  "Adult-alternative?"  "Nerd-rock?"   8-)
Plus - Adventures in Christmas music!

GASTRONOMICAL UNIT is a band (more like a loose collection of friends) separated by geography.  The group orbits around Binghamton, NY with key members in Syracuse, Rochester, Philadelphia,  and NYC.  Due to the distance, GU primarily focuses on original compositions and recording.
Members of the the group began collaborating as early as 1988, creating the bands Fear of Nebraska and EJO (Evan's Jazz Opera) along the way. Gastronomical Unit itself formed in 1996, when the group EJO merged with the unnamed "Christmas album" gang.  At a group of recording/jam sessions called Free Assemblies the core members came together and explored creating music together.

Now,
Gastronomical Unit music embodies both roots of its origins: Smart-pop (a la Squeeze/ Barenaked Ladies/ TMBG/ Crowded House) and Holiday Music in original forms (parodies, wacky styles, originals, classics).  A technology-savvy group, they have self-produced 7 private Christmas albums and 2 Rock CDs to date.  The best tracks are now getting released on the Holiday Feast CDs.

GASTRONOMICAL UNIT had a long time presence on the famous Mp3.com until its demise in 2003, and now the band has a new recompilation of Christmas songs available on CDbaby - go check it out!

GASTRONOMICAL UNIT
MEMBERS

Peter Chady
Guitar, Vocals, awkward drums, sequenced keyboard parts, original music and lyrics, audio engineering, web master, graphic designer, and “manager” (i.e. lackey who gets the schlepping done).  Responsible for the groove and the facilitator of the silly.
“Binghamton, NY”(Endwell, NY)
Sean Wall
Comedy writings, lyrics, Vocals, Computer Animations (if he ever finishes one), general silliness.
Ocala, FL
J Ted Potter
Our Stellar songwriter and lyricist, Vocals, Keyboard, enough acoustic guitar to get the point across.  Ted is the heart and soul of our “real” music.
Rochester, NY
Michael “Shroom” Chen
Vocals, Keyboard, original music and lyrics, dark brooding techno and theatrical influence.
Philadelphia, PA
Christopher Platt
Our urban culture representative, bringing jazz and classic choral music to our lives, then beating us over the head with avant-rock, also, he plays a mean (and I mean MEAN, as in you wonder if he has a deep physical loathing for his equipment) piano, and he can sing quite nicely.  Complex original music.
Hoboken, NJ (if you live in NY), or
“New York City”, if you live in the rest of the country.

Stuart Davis
A British fellow who lost his way and ended up in upstate NY.  Provides keyboards, wry humor, and tea.
Syracuse, NY
Ernie Pichette
An incredible drummer who graciously lends us his talents on occasion.
Syracuse, NY
Christine Chady
One hot soprano vocalist, and the guitarist’s wife. No touchy!  Also, original lyrics.
Binghamton, NY
Kristy Boyer Chen
A performing theater alto vocalist, and future governor of Pennsylvania.
Philadelphia, PA
Mark Sylvester
Accoustic guitarist, most stringed instruments, and some woodwinds. A Frighteningly talented player whom we try to keep at a distance so he doesn’t make the rest of us look bad. Original instrumental music.
“Washington DC” (College Park, MD)
Rand Hubiak
Vocals, guitar/piano, original music&lyrics, and Madonna impersonations.
“The Shore”, NJ
Adam Silverstein
Keyboards, Vocals, original music & lyrics, plus resident professor of Jewish, Japanese, and Automotive Studies.
