Interesting letters from Mrs. Lorena B. Thayer, daughter of Hezekiah McKune
and Elizabeth Lewis, and from Rev. Geo .Comfort of Montana, were then read,
also a fine poem from the pen of John Hilborn and a few interesting items
connected with life of Hon J.H. McKune of Sacramento City, Cal, remarks by
Rev. Malpass.
Not complete, however, is our record of the day without the mention of its
one sad event, tho tinging and softening the festivities of the day. Many
of us hardly reaching our homes and others yet lingering around the happy
scene of the day came the long "good bye" of Grandma McKune. Almost like a
thunderclap from out a clear sky, yet, how fitting, how sadly beautiful was
the going out of that life upon the natal day. Hovering several days around
the opening doors of the weakening body prison, lingering, as it were, only
but to join with the many friends in this happy reunion upon earth, then, as
the shades of evening began to fall, joyously winging its way to that
happier eternal reunion beyong, went the spirit of one who by her long life
of usefulness, her bright intellect, her Christian fortitude and resignation
in the infirmities of advanced years had endeared herself in the hearts of
all who were so fortunate as to have her acquaintance and confidence.
Mary Hilborn was born Aug. 5, 1792 in Harmony Township. Dec. 6, 1817 was
